5-Axis CNC Machine for Sale

A computer numerical control (CNC) milling machine cuts a shape out of a block of metal. These machines are traditionally three-axis models. However, the five-axis machine adds axes to approach the part from all directions with the same machine.

CNC machines are precision instruments that can cut faster and more efficiently than manual machining. Being run by a computer, these machines can program and repeat cuts over and over.

If your company can benefit from a five-axis CNC machine, choose R.R.I.C. Associates for used models for sale.

Understanding the Additional Axes

A traditional three-axis machine can move in three directions — X, Y and Z. X movement is left to right, Y movement is front to back and Z movement is from top to bottom. A five-axis machine adds two more axes to create a more versatile function and handle more complex geometries.

The A-Axis

The first axis is the A-axis, which rotates the machine bed around the X-axis — or horizontally. This rotation's primary function is to maneuver the metal so the other axes can better access it.

The B-Axis

The B-axis supplements the A-axis as it tilts vertically. This rotation of the tool bed can cut metal at various angles rather than simply up and down.

Together, these axes cut and maneuver the material on five separate faces of one piece simultaneously, expanding the CNC range.

Advantages of 5-Axis CNC Mills

Because five-axis CNC milling machines are so complex, they have various benefits for your part production line.

Enhanced Machining Capabilities

Before the five-axis CNCC mill existed, machines could only work along vertical axes, only being able to work with square or rectangular-style parts. With simultaneous, multisided machining, machinists can craft complex geometries and contours in a single operation.

Improved Accuracy and Precision

Rotation adds much more access to the part than what was previously possible. Now, with angles and contours, there is no need for manually repositioning the part. Instead, five-axis machines are flexible, precise and adaptable, with a swivel head to create cuts in every direction.

Reduction in Setup Time and Increased Productivity

The five-axis machine can do it all in one setup. Traditional three-axis machines can require multiple setups, which increases the possibility of error. With the more complex alternative, you only need to set it up once, improving efficiency, eliminating errors, saving time and reducing costs.

Expanded Range of Applications and Industries

With the five-axis CNC machine, the part production range is almost limitless. This equipment can work like other machines like lathes, vertical machining centers or three-axis mills. You can also upload to its modern CAD/CAM software, making it the most versatile piece of equipment available.
